“We entered by the East-gate in good heart and with determination, and our footsteps rang once more in the ancient mansions of the Dwarves.

Before venturing deeper into the darkness, we came upon Oda, an archaeologist, intent upon the study of an ancient door. She spoke of it with great interest and declared that it would open only on Durin’s Day. Her words were heeded with care, for in such places every secret is worthy of respect.

Further on we took the bridge and secured the second hall. The resistance was slight: five goblins came against us. Some were slain and others fled. Even so, a watch is kept, for an enemy that escapes may carry word to others.

From there we looked as far as the Stairs of Sun and Moon and observed what we could without haste. It was not yet time to advance rashly, but to learn the ground well and hold what had been gained. Thus the bridge remains in our hands, and the second hall also. It is a good beginning.

After securing our position, we sent Oda to bring word to Balin and let him know that he may advance. We hope that our own folk will arrive before the fleeing goblins can return with orc reinforcements…”
